July is the start of summer and this year it's in full force, driving a lot of us to seek mindless distractions. Sometimes you’ve gotta go with the flow, so here’s a few things that I’ve learned recently that you might find interesting but not too heavy for consumption on a 100 degree day.
· Moving this summer? Buy or sell used moving boxes at locally-owned EcoBox.
· What country is on the forefront of ecological sustainability having passed policies directing the entire country to be powered by renewable energy by 2025 and all new buildings to be carbon neutral by 2016? Wales. Yep, Wales.
· In addition to delighting the senses, modern art can also clean the air.
· This heat making you thirsty? So are the homeless. Take an extra bottle with you when you get in the car and give it away – this simple act could be life saving.
· You can lighten the landfill and help local farmers build nutrient-rich soil by composting your organic waste at the Downtown and Triangle Farmers’ Markets. No more excuses, condo-dwellers!
So, what’s the point? It’s summer and while we may be unable to think past the next sno-cone due to the record-setting heat, don’t forget there’s still fun new stuff to learn. Hang in there, Austin!
