Speaker: Gabriel Thoumi, Senior Business Development Manager, Global Forestry Director, MGM International
Discussion Topic: Gabriel Thoumi will discuss the required steps to develop an international and/or domestic forestry carbon project. This includes issues related to regulations, contracts, effective communication, strategic analysis, project screening, carbon accounting and carbon pools, financial accounting, co-benefits including biodiversity and local community development, and sales strategies.
About the Speaker:
Gabriel Thoumi joined MGM International’s Business Development Team in 2007 as Global Forestry Director and Senior Business Development Manager participating in the technical and commercial development of forestry carbon project origination, financing, commercialization, identification, strategy, and technical writing in North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Australasia. He has participated in the development and/or identification of over 40 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), Climate Community Biodiversity Alliance (CCB), Climate Action Reserve (CAR), International Standards Organization (ISO), and Permanent Forest Sink Initiative (PFSI) projects. In addition, he has participated in the development of international financing mechanisms focusing on avoided deforestation; afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation; improved forest management; forestry carbon insurance; and biodiversity offsets credits mechanisms. He has frequently presented on forestry carbon strategy at various conferences. He is a member of The Forests Dialogue and has participated in the technical analysis of American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 and lobbying efforts of the Coalition of Offset Providers, Avoided Deforestation Partners, and the Coalition for Emission Reduction Projects.
Before joining MGM International, Mr. Thoumi, while attending the University of Michigan, consulted on environmental markets, marketing, sustainable business development, and forestry carbon for organizations such as Intel Corporation, Anglo Coal South Africa, CERES, WWF, Malaysian Nature Society, and Conservation and Community Investment Forum. From 2000 to 2006, Mr. Thoumi had a successful financial career focusing on institutional brokerage, cash management, portfolio management, and risk management. While at Wells Fargo Global Correspondent Banking, he led a team managing daily $4 billion in liquidity and Fed Funds and $1 billion line-of-credit for over 1,000 banks while assisting with credit analyses and while at Wells Fargo Institutional Brokerage and Sales, he managed a pledged collateral portfolio for 2,000 community banks and their third-party institutional relationships. In the 1990s, Mr. Thoumi had a successful career working as an assistant curator of art history for a collection of research and teaching projection slides at the University of Maryland.
