Environmental, Social and Governance Failures of the Financial Meltdown and How to Recover

Speaker: Jed Sturman, Index Manager, KLD Research & Analytics

Discussion Topic: One of the premises of Sustainable and Responsible Investing (SRI) is a focus on issues of systemic impact. In the instance of the current financial crisis and subprime lending, predatory lending practices and institutional failures have proven to be bad for borrowers, communities, lenders, and the financial system as a whole.  Executive compensation has become a targeted issue for bailed-out financial institutions as attempts by the Clinton administration to create a pay-for-performance compensation model have in turn created excessive focus on short-term planning.  Meanwhile, recent fluctuations in oil prices have exposed our reliance on an unpredictable and limited natural resource.

During this Issues in Depth Call, Jed Sturman, Index Manager at KLD Research & Analytics, will discuss these factors in greater depth as they relate to failures in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues.  Moving on from the factors which created this crisis, Jed will highlight a path forward that includes a future with “green collar jobs” to develop a new energy infrastructure as a way to stimulate the ailing economy.

About Jed: Jed Sturman manages environmental indexes at KLD Research & Analytics, a leading provider of environmental, social and governance research and indexes for investment professionals. Outside of work, Jed sits on the leadership team for the Net Impact Boston professional chapter as the VP of Strategy and is the co-founder of TD Athletes Edge.
