Discussion Topic: Many complex challenges are facing our world, and The Hitachi Foundation believes that business has an essential role in solving them.  The Foundation’s mission is to forge an authentic integration of business actions and societal wellbeing in North America.

The Hitachi Foundation is embarking on its new five-year strategy even as the nation faces the worst economic crisis of our generation.  The Foundation’s newest program, the Mita Business in Society Fellowship, is co-sponsored by Net Impact.  The goal of the fellowship is to take two recent MBA graduates and put them to work on The Hitachi Foundation’s efforts to forge a productive relationship between business and society; they work at The Hitachi Foundation’s offices in Washington, DC.

During this Issues in Depth call, we will be bringing you three voices of the Foundation.  Barbara Dyer, President and CEO of The Hitachi Foundation will be discussing the Mita Fellowship and the impact that it can have on the way current and future business leaders view their role in the global community.  We will also be introducing you to the 2009 Mita Fellows Tom Strong and Jenny Harms.  Each will spend time discussing the specific projects they are working on at the Foundation.

Mr. Strong, who works specifically with the Foundation’s Business & Work Program, will be sharing what is being accomplished to ensure that lower-wage workers have the skills and talents to move them and the economy forward.  Ms. Harms splits her time between the Hitachi Community Action Partnership (HCAP) and the Yoshiyama Program.  She finds new ways to engage Hitachi employees in the business of corporate citizenship through the HCAP program, and is helping develop a new iteration of the Yoshiyama Program, recognizing social entrepreneurs who are helping those in or not far from poverty.

Conference line information and presentation materials will be distributed via direct email following registration.
